Monterey Zoo has always taken great pride in affording our staff the ability to choose somewhat choose the department and animals they enjoy working with the most while still maintaining an atmosphere that is as diverse as possible on any given day. A keeper at Monterey Zoo could be working with a spider in the morning and a rhino in the afternoon while we attempt to schedule individuals to work with animals they are most inspired by. We do not prescribe to “departments” that limit our staff’s daily routine to one specific species or animal group which we feel makes for a much more rewarding and exciting career.
Although experience is sometimes required and preferred, it is not always a deal breaker as the we believe that a true “animal loving heart” and a solid work ethic are as valuable to us as that which we can teach an individual on the job. Work hours for all are scheduled as follows: We begin work at a certain scheduled time. We leave work when ALL is done and the animals are in need of nothing further to assure the health, well-being and safety. We also accept that our schedules can be modified at any given minute of any day should the animal’s health, well-being and comfort require such. Finally, we ALL do whatever is necessary to keep the boat afloat… no-one is above or beneath any activity, to include our managers, owners and board members. Our goals remain the same.
Staff members must be 18 years of age and have the physical abilities to accomplish the required labor descriptions per the job they will be doing. Limited housing is possible when available. Most positions are full time, 8-10hrs. daily. Staff must be able to work a flexible schedule as well as be willing to work any and all holidays although care is taken to afford all as much time off as possible during the holidays without deterring from the needs and care of our animals.
