There are two types of camels: dromedary and bacterian. Dromedaries have one hump, while bacterian camels have two humps. You can see both types at the Monterey Zoo. Several of our camels are elderly animals that were surrendered or rescued from less than desirable circumstances as some feel they make suitable pets. This couldn’t be further from the truth and like many other animals at our zoo, we urge all to find alternatives means of interacting with such animal instead of attempting to own one as a pet. Volunteering to work with the very same animals at a zoo is the perfect way to achieve your desire to meet and interact with these animals.

Be sure to contact Monterey Zoo and inquire about our VIP  hands-on animal experiences that can be tailored to enable you to meet our camels, very up-close and personal.
